Charley Cranna: Paul Newman - the race car driver.

My memory is from the early 70’s attending SCCA races with my two young sons.  One of them pointed at the program and asked, “Hey Dad who’s this guy Paul Newman?”  I had no idea, asked a few others sitting nearby and nobody knew who he was!

Well, the next year while we were strolling thru the paddock, here comes P L Newman.  Of course the light came on as soon as I saw him – just one of the guys walking in the crowd.  Nobody chasing him and no media or press hounding him.  My boys didn’t believe me when I explained who he was.  And that’s the way he always was for the many times we saw him race, “just one of the guys”.
